A WORKER died at a Hope Island workshop yesterday afternoon after a forklift tipped over and landed on him.

Workmates stood in disbelief and a woman collapsed on the grass after being told of the tragedy at Superior Jetties.

The man, believed to be aged 37, was pinned under the forklift.

Despite quickly being removed from beneath it he sustained critical injuries and could not be saved.

Six police cars, five ambulances and a fire truck responded to the tragedy on John Lund Dve just before 4pm.

By 6pm, two investigators from Queensland Workplace Health and Safety had arrived.

It was at this time a woman parked her BMW just down the road from the workshop.

A worker pointed at the car, directing a female police officer that the driver was the person she had been looking for.

The officer ran and pulled aside the woman who then collapsed on to the grass as the officer told her the bad news.

Shortly after another man arrived and comforted the woman as they walked into the Superior Jetties workshop.

Police and the two Workplace Health and Safety investigators continued into the night trying to determine what had happened.

Inside the workshop one forklift could be seen tipped on its side, its four small wheels facing the street while another forklift stood upright beside it.

A spokesman for Workplace Health and Safety, which is the lead agency, said there was no other information last night.

“We have an inspector and investigator on site,” he said.
