Tenders to close for parklands
WORK will start early next year on the $2 million first stage of the Gold Coast’s newest parklands.
The Robina City Parklands will be built next to Cbus Super Stadium on 17ha of floodplain land once known as the city’s “green heart”.
Picnic areas, a kiosk, walking trails and a performance space will all be created. Tenders for the project close tomorrow and will be awarded before Christmas.
Area councillor Hermann Vorster said the tendered works would “do the heavy lifting” to embellish the site.
“In the past two years we have worked hard on masterplanning this land to make the most of it,” he said.
“It will be like the Broadwater Parklands of Southport but in suburbia and will be different from any other park on the Gold Coast.
“We will create new nature trails and wetlands to give kids an opportunity to get their hands dirty and appreciate the great outdoors.”
An annual fishing competition will be held early next month, the first event to use the land.
The entire parklands project is expected to cost $15 million, about $2 million of which will be used in stage one.
The parklands will include a village green and performance stage with a capacity of about 5000 for concerts.
Mayor Tom Tate said Robina and Varsity Lakes residents deserved a worldclass parkland on their doorstep.
“There will be plenty to see, do and experience for all ages including nature walks, entertainment and fishing spots,” he said.
“Early feedback has been incredible and it goes to show locals want us to make the most of the open space we already have.”
