Coast bowlers shine in Champion of Champions competition

- with Brett Wilkie

GOLD Coast bowlers have dominated the Queensland Champion of Club Champions event, taking out the men’s and women’s singles titles at Club Helensvale.

In the men’s competition, the Paradise Point bowls coordinator and former South African international Eric Johannes (pictured right) cruised to a comfortable 25-5 victory over Tansey bowler Neil Chauvier to claim gold.

In the women’s competition New Zealand international Katelyn Inch (Broadbeach, pictured left) pulled out to an early lead over Adele Pershouse.

The Bargara bowler persevered to close down the gap in the second half of the game but could not find the steam needed to stop Inch from taking the win 25-18. In the men’s pairs, Aron Sherriff and I enjoyed the home-ground advantage to win the gold.

The women’s event was won by Enoggera’s Maria Rigby and Ester Regan who beat Broadbeach’s Inch and former Australian rep Julie Keegan in sectional play. Inch and Keegan took bronze.

Tweed Heads’ Kurt Brown and Max Jaffray beat Matt Lucas and Nathan Rice in the semi-final of the district pairs.

The final is Alan Law and Paul Staggard Jr v Brown and Jaffray tomorrow at Tweed Heads from 5pm (Qld time).

Aron Sherriff, Robbie Grady and I were successful over the weekend, winning the $15,000 Ocean Shores Classic Fours.

Thank you to everyone for the kind words after I won the Bowls Australia International Bowler of the Year last week.

Congrat to all winners, including Gold Coasters Jessie Cottell (Female Junior Bowler), Kelvin Kerkow (Coach), Geoff O’Meagher (Volunteer) and Jake Fehlberg (Bowler with a Disability).

Fehlberg is also a finalist in the Queensland Sport Awards Athlete with a Disability category. Fehlberg’s Commonwealth Games gold medalwinning partner, Lynne Seymour, is also a finalist.

The awards will be held in Brisbane on November 28.

Beenleigh have won the Combined South East Queensland Division 2 Pennant at Pine Rivers. Gold Coast Tweed over-60 men’s team had three wins in the quad series in Brisbane.
