Zorko magic act at Cats

Broadbeach opt for brother of Lions AFL star

THE brother of Brisbane Lions star Dayne Zorko has been appointed the head coach of the Broadbeach Cats QAFL side.

Beau Zorko will replace Brett Andrews in the role after the former coach guided the Cats to the 2018 grand final.

Zorko, who won a junior indoor cricket World Cup, has been coaching for 11 years and beat a list of 14 other candidates for the position.

The new head Cat started his coaching career in 2007 at junior club Surfers Paradise and has since spent time working with Gold Coast’s representative teams before working as a senior assistant under Jarrod Field at Labrador in 2009.

Zorko coached the Surfers Paradise senior team from 2010 to 2014, the first year of the revamped QAFL before shifting to the Suns to work with the club’s academy system in 2015 and 2016.

He had a year off in 2017 and joined the Demons again this season to work under the club’s QAFL coach Brad Moore.

Zorko said it inspired him to follow his passion and try to develop his coaching further.

“I thoroughly enjoyed being back in the QAFL landscape and also being back at club land,” Zorko said.

“It’s a great community and has a network of people who love their club. I enjoyed watching Brad operate and that was a driving force (behind the move).”

Zorko said he was excited to be joining a club fresh off a grand final appearance and knew it came with added pressure to perform.

“I have aspirations to coach at a higher level in time,” Zorko said.

“To be able to do that I certainly acknowledge the club needs success and it’s something I embrace. I won’t let it dictate me.”

Zorko said he hadn’t started working on the playing list for 2019 but stressed he wouldn’t be attempting to poach any players from the Demons.
