REMEMBERING ACROSS THE GENERATIONS
THERE’S almost 80 years between them but yesterday Noel Hull and Summer Wookey came together to pay their respects.
Mr Hull, 87, was a flagbearer while Summer, 8, wore a tartan skirt in tribute to her Scottish grandfathers for Remembrance Day at War Memorial Park in Burleigh Heads.
They were among more than 200 people who gathered to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.
The Varsity Lakes student presented Mr Hull, a former Army reservist, with a poppy.
Mr Hull, a Burleigh Heads RSL sub branch member, said it was a touching gesture.
“It’s a big thing, it’s good to see the kids remembering what happened,” Mr Hull, who was wearing his father’s and great grandfather’s medals, said.
“What happened cannot be forgotten, the sacrifices made by young Australians ... you can’t let the memory die.
“It makes you feel good, that they want to do it.”
Summer’s grandfathers served in WWI, WWII and the Falklands War.
“She (Summer) even wore her tartan skirt to remember her grandfathers,” said mum Karen Wookey.
During the ceremony, Burleigh RSL sub branch senior vice president Paul Spooner said it was vital to remember the sacrifices of service men and women even 100 years on from World War I.
“Today, people will gather at local war memorials such as this to remember all those young Australians who gave their lives,” Mr Spooner said.
“We who remain have been chosen to preserve their memory. ”
