Van Helvoirt’s lone hand

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

REBECCA Van Helvoirt added to her case for higher honours after a solo effort against Valleys in the Katherine Raymont Shield yesterday.

The Coast wicketkeeperbat compiled 61 from 105 balls as wickets fell around her.

The Dolphins could do no better than 166, which Valleys (4-167) chased down in just 25 overs, largely driven by opener Leteysha Randall’s 60 off 47.

Having reached 2-76 at one stage as Van Helvoirt combined with Tara Wheeler (29), Gold Coast coach Garry Lovett said losing wickets in clumps had been costly.

“A couple of the girls got starts. We spoke about that at the start of the game and we spoke about it at the end of the game as well: Those starts we need to convert into a score,” he said.

The good news centred around Van Helvoirt, who now has 270 runs for the season at an average of 45.

“She’s killing it. This would be her best season yet by far,” Lovett said. “She’s keeping really well too.”

Van Helvoirt also showed her versatility by bowling an over of off-spin.

The competition moves into the Twenty20 phase next Sunday, with the Dolphins to face Sandgate-Redcliffe and Valleys in a double-header at Bill Pippen Oval.

“We will be taking on all of these other clubs without their state players,” Lovett said.
