I am sitting in a shopping centre observing. There are proper rubbish bins installed for general refuse. No sign of any yellow recycle bins anywhere. People are putting the cans and bottles in the general rubbish bins, sadly a lot of the recyclables are left in the garden, nature strip or gutter. Here’s a idea: fit a smaller yellow recycle bin to the general bin, with bold signage. Squash cans and plastic bottles, save space. Hey kids, collect and bag them up. Take them home, and mum or dad can take them to a recycle collection point. Guess what? Good pocket money. Caring Citizen.

My American trucker friend based in Wisconsin and travels all over the US told me yesterday he fuelled up at a truck stop in Indiana yesterday and diesel was $3.50 a US gallon which equates to 77 cents a litre Australian. He also says their fuel prices don’t float up and down like here. We are being ripped off. KenW.

Hey Barney, police can check the public to see if they are using drugs, but they are not subject to drug testing, so that applies to GCCC Councillors. Next you will expect politicians to be drug tested, in ya dreams pal. Steve truckie.

Dave D, (GCB 13/11). You must be joking saying pot smoking for personal use should be legalised. The mental asylums are full of young ones who fried their brains on dope and ended up schizo and will stay locked up because they are classed as a high risk to mix with the public. Anne, a schoolteacher.

Main Beach Progress Association article suggests a low cost hop on, hop off train service to the northern end of The Spit. A far simpler public transport solution would be to extend the existing bus services. Just needs a few extra stops along existing roads and for the buses to run the extra 3km to Doug Jennings Park and the existing cafe. The northern end of The Spit has some great access and parking facilities, just needs some public toilets on the western side of Doug Jennings Park to service those existing facilities. Simple and economic solutions, put the 10K planning money towards standard bus stops. Work towards some quieter buses. Bruce P, Main Beach resident.

The terrorist in Melbourne had passport cancelled when he wanted to travel to Syria. Why didn’t they let him go then cancel it? Grey

LS. I think you are in the minority regarding dogs in cafes. Are you really serious about dogs being family members? You sure do have a funny family. We own a dog, however they are pets and I don’t want them peeing on my leg while I’m sitting at a cafe. Think of others not yourself. Jayar.

It’s ok saying the ocean is the sharks’ habitat and we entered their territory. What if they enter a man made canal and lake system, do we then get to decide? As they have now entered our domain?

Let’s be honest – the real reason behind dogs at cafes is … money! Not the dogs. It is purely a marketing gimmick to try to help the owners make a point of difference.

You should never feel stupid, you just didn’t work it out at the time. Kev, Helensvale.

Seriously? Get over the dogs at cafes debate. Either go to a dog friendly or a no dogs venue. Your choice, easy! It’s time to get real about shark attacks. Us humans are only wanting small areas of beach along our coastline to feel safe to swim, surf and enjoy our beautiful beaches without the threat of shark attacks. The sharks have the whole ocean and all the wild natural coastal areas where no one lives and yet we are condemned by the greenies and unreasonable shark lovers for wanting such a small portion of nature to enjoy. Put the nets up! Barry

So the best response the government has to the latest terrorism episode in Melbourne is to rename a lane after the innocent murdered man. Shouldn’t they start by deporting every person who is on their so-called watch list, including all family members and associated people. I bet if the prime minister’s father was killed by a knife-wielding terrorist, there would be action. The Mad Rooster

Well, the sound of silence from Muslims and the left wing lot is simply overwhelming! Where is the outrage and condemnation after that terrorist in Melbourne? All in the name of his cult too! Imagine if some other “religious nut” did that and then claimed that, under his religion, what he did was authorised. The uproar would be so deafening, and all the other adherents of this religion closely watched. The powers that be said they knew of this man, and his relatives, and yet he was still able to do this heinous act. Some security watchdog they are! Better watch out that homeless guy with the shopping trolley isn’t charged with assault! Burleigh Boy.
