IT’S TIME TO GIVE YOUTH A BREAK – THEY NEED IT
IT is important we educate our youth on the importance of preparation to help them have a long and fulfilled life in their chosen sport.
It is essential that while young they take breaks and enjoy active rest while doing another sport.
They also need to address any nagging injury that negatively affected their performance.
In other words, let’s assume a young athlete finished their season tired, maybe sore, but otherwise intact.
The exact amount of time for “rest’’ will be different for each individual, and will differ in the youngest age groups, sport, and level of play. But there are some general guidelines applicable to all groups.
Total rest has a balance point, as too much time completely off from all physical exercise has negative effects.
I would encourage young athletes to take time off from the rigours of their sport to recharge mentally and during that time perform safe activity that allows physical regeneration.
For example, athletes involved in jumping and sprinting sports such as basketball or soccer could continue with low impact activity such as bicycling, swimming, elliptical trainer, and some general weight training and aerobic group sessions.
Generally, two to four-week break would benefit the athlete to feel mentally and emotionally fresh and prepare for next season.
These are only guidelines but it is necessary for all athletes to take a well-earned rest from training and competition.
