Helping patients regain health drives Coast GP

- EMILY HALLORAN

DURING the past six years, Dr Cristina Beer says, she has helped tens of thousands of people overcome health issues after they had been turned away by general practitioners.

The 35-year-old from Mermaid Beach graduated from medical school in 2008 and has created a successful career as a holistic GP.

A holistic GP analyses the patient as a whole, taking their physical, mental and spiritual needs into consideration to understand the person’s health issues.

Mrs Beer said through her own “challenges”, she had sought advice from a holistic GP and was so inspired she had wanted to become one herself.

Working with “amazing” patients and seeing how they recovered was a big part of why Mrs Beer ke[t doing what she did best, she said.

“What drives me is seeing people get better who didn’t think they ever would.

“Sometimes people think they are going crazy, or it’s in their head, but I acknowledge it and help them.”

But, she said, her most rewarding achievement had been her daughter.

“My five-year-old daughter told me she wants to be a doctor like mummy,” Mrs Beer said.

“I know she will probably change her mind a 100 times but it’s still special.”

Mrs Beer has been selected as a finalist in the Bulletin’s Gold Coast Women of the Year awards in the Wellness Warrior category.

The Harvey Norman Gold Coast Women of the Year winners will be announced on International Women’s Day, Friday, March 8.
