Coast marks NZ’s Waitangi
THOUSANDS of people gathered at Broadwater Parklands yesterday to celebrate Waitangi Day a week on.
The national New Zealand celebration commemorates the signing of the treaty of Waitangi on February 6 in 1840.
Organisers said about 4000 people were at the Broadwater to enjoy the free entertainment.
Other Waitangi Day selebrations were held at the Beer Garden Bar in Surfers Paradise with a free barbecue and screening the Super Sevens rugby tournament.
Southport Sharks also got into the Kiwi spirit with a New Zealand-inspired menu for the weekend.
Celebrations on the Gold Coast began last weekend with events at Westfield Coomera.
The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show more than 44,000 New Zealanders live on the Coast, making Kiwis the biggest international migrants living in the city.
