Knife went through man’s hand

-

AN alcoholic woman stabbed her boyfriend so forcefully the knife went through his hand.

Katrina Patricia Nadine Gorrie, 31, pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrates Court yesterday to assault occasioning bodily harm and two counts of fraud.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair sentenced her to two years’ jail, which was wholly suspended, and two years probation.

Gorrie, who has a drinking problem, spent more than 200 days in custody but they were not taken into account as she was on parole at the time of the stabbing on November 7, 2017.

“If the eight months in custody is not enough to press upon you that you need to address your drinking problem, I’m not sure what will,” Mr Sinclair said.

As a condition of the probation, Mr Sinclair ordered Gorrie not consume alcohol.

Prosecutor Bernhard Berger said Gorrie and her boyfriend, a Brazilian national, were in an argument in Gorrie’s Coolangatta home when she produced a knife and began following him, making a stabbing motion.

“The victim has raised his hand in self-defence and he has been stabbed,” he said.

The wound was so forceful the knife went right through his hand.

Mr Berger said Gorrie went with her boyfriend to the emergency room.

The court was also told that in March last year Gorrie sold two iPhones on Gumtree and took the money.

The phones were never given to the purchasers.

Gorrie’s lawyer Ashkan Tai, of Ashkan Tai Lawyers, said Gorrie had almost completed a social work degree and had become qualified as a hair dresser while on remand.
