Brennan happy with selection headaches

- STEELE TAYLOR

IN the hotly-contested battle for backline berths at the Titans, Brenko Lee captured the attention of coach Garth Brennan with his efforts at a trial at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

The 23-year-old was in the thick of the action during their 22-16 loss to North Queensland.

“I thought Brenko Lee had some really good touches,” Brennan said.

“You can see when he carries the ball that he’s strong and he’s got great footwork.

“He went looking for work, so there’s some (selection) headaches.

“(Phillip) Sami, (Anthony) Don, they were good and there were guys who didn’t play today who were good and who could come into the equation, like (Tyrone) Peachey.

“But they’re good headaches to have.”

Brennan also thought Lismore-born Brian Kelly played well.

But he made special mention of Lee and that suggests the 193cm talent could be in line to keep his spot in the Gold Coast three-quarter line, despite the recruitment of Peachey and the return of Kelly, from the Sea Eagles.

Brennan also held praise for an understrength Titans engine room, which came up against a powerful North Queensland pack in the opening exchanges of their trial.

“That was an awesome middle the Cowboys rolled out there,” he said.

“It’s pretty impressive when they’ve got (Jordan) McLean, (Matthew) Scott and (Jason) Taumalolo … all marquee, top NRL players out there.

“So I thought our middle three, Max (King) and (Jack) Stockwell and Moe (Moeaki Fotuaika) did a pretty god job at the start.”

He also lauded the efforts of backrower Will Matthews.
