THREE-TOWER PROJECT HERALDED AS NEW CHAPTER FOR AGED CARE

- ANDREW POTTS

BOTH the young and old will have a place inside the Gold Coast’s newest aged care development.

Construction will begin in April on the Odyssey aged care project, a threetower development tipped to more closely resemble a five-star hotel than traditional nursing home.

It wll be built on a site on the corner of Christine Ave and The Crestway, Robina. Residents are due to move into the first building, a sixlevel tower, in July 2020. It will be followed by seven and eight-storey towers.

Odyssey boss Phil Usher has worked in aged care for nearly 20 years and said his project would not be a standard aged care home.

“The model is built around a resort-style environment where couples can stay together, pets are welcome, grandkids have sleepovers and, most importantly, your dignity and independence are highly respected,” he said.

The first stage of the development will include 148 luxury apartments, a leisure centre, restaurant and piano lounges.

A skygarden will also be included, with a view of Robina.

A childcare centre will be included for staff while the third stage is also expected to house facilities for young people with disabilities.

Mr Usher said an on-site childcare centre had many benefits. “There is a mutual benefit for young kids being close to grandparents and most carers have kids so it makes it easier for staff and de-stresses them.”
