BRISSIE BREW A REAL TREAT
We can thank the neighbours for this sessionable golden lager, which keeps drawing you back for more
NEWSTEAD Brewing Company, apart from making great beers, also provides enlightening information on why they name their beers the way they do.
Their golden lager, The Mayne Thing, is yet another fine example and, along with delivering a flavoursome drop, you can always learn a thing or two from the story on the can.
Yet, it’s still what’s inside the can that counts.
The Mayne Thing is a lighter golden colour than some other golden lagers but that doesn’t mean it foregoes flavour.
It has a frothy, white head and appealing nose which initially presents a hop aroma before making way for malts.
There is plenty of flavour from the outset with the fruity hop characteristics subsiding to maltiness, although it isn’t overpowering. It offers good body — it’s not the “thin” beer you may expect from lager — and it’s well balanced, leaving the palate with a degree of bitterness, drawing you back for more.
The lingering nature of the beer is what makes it so desirable, but it’s also a top thirst quencher with very good sessionability.
It is a full strength beer at 4.7 per cent but, unlike some golden lagers, this doesn’t sit heavily in the gut.
It might go well with pork dishes, a spiced Thai salad or even a decent peppered pie.
As for the name, well, you will have to buy some and find out for yourself.
