Pirates knock out Hawks in a thriller

- with Brett Wilkie

IN a replay of last year’s grand final, Brisbane Pirates featuring Kelsey Cottrell ended the Gold Coast Hawks’ run in the semi-finals of the ninth Bowls Premier League in New Zealand.

In a thriller, it came down to a tie-break to decide the winner. Georgia White held the shot for the Hawks before Cottrell nailed the jack. The Hawks were unable to dislodge it with Nathan Rice only just missing and Aron Sherriff’s last drive missing by millimetres.

The Pirates beat Melbourne in the preliminary

final to advance to the grand final where they were defeated by Illawarra Gorillas. Scottish Legend Alex Marshall (Pirates) was the Most Valuable Player for the event.

■ BURLEIGH Heads have kept their unbeaten record in Q Sevens intact after defeating second placed Musgrave Hill in Round 7. Burleigh’s undefeated fours rink of Scott DeJong, Mark Foley, David Kennedy and Dennis Hurst racked up their seventh win for the season when they defeated Musgrave’s Phil Jordan, Owen Patch, Gary Mounsey and Glen Bailey 20-16.

In the pairs, Burleigh’s Alan Law and Steven Coffey defeated Mark Spring and Brian Baldwin 33-12 to secure the overall win.

Chris Le Lievre salvaged one rink win for Musgrave, defeating Ian Law 31-29 in the singles rubber.

Burleigh are well clear on top of the ladder. The other four teams in the section are playing for second and a place in the post sectional rounds (top two advance).

Paradise Point (fifth) had their first win of the season over Moorooka (fourth).

Broadbeach, who were third going into this round, had a bye. Three rounds remain before post-sectional rounds and then finals at Musgrave Hill on April 6-7.

■ TWEED Heads continued their run of form in the Queensland Premier League defeating Belmont Blaze on all three rinks to remain on top of the ladder.

Broadbeach and Helensvale had wins to lift them into the top five while South Tweed’s horror run continued with their fourth straight loss dropping them to eighth.

■ BROADBEACH have won their third straight Gold Coast Tweed Ladies District Fours final, with Cassandra Millerick, Sue McKenzie, Dee Anne Robertson and Bolivia Millerick beating Mermaid’s Heather Hayward, Margaret Panousis, Merlinda Gill and Rhonda Green 20-12 yesterday.
