Currumbin not giving up title as kings of kids without a fight

- ELIZA REILLY

AFTER winning last year’s Youth State Championships, Currumbin junior head coach Dan Norton-Smith believes his squad has what it takes to go back-to-back.

The club this week managed to book out a whole res- taurant to host a team dinner for junior competitors and volunteers ahead of their title defence.

“Last year we won lots of medals and we were really proud of how we went,” Norton-Smith said.

“This year, the kids are really happy and confident.

“Every year, we set ourselves a goal of finishing in the top five so that’s what we’re aiming for and anything more than that is a bonus.”

Despite being runaway winners last year and defeating local powerhouse Northcliffe by 66 points, Norton-Smith admits a number of challengers are lining up to dethrone his Vikings. “There are some really strong clubs around who are all gunning for the same title so it’s going to be tough,” he said.

“We’re going to have to be at our best.”

Norton-Smith said the club’s senior squad were also well prepared to improve on their third finish from last year.

“We have some really good teams and depth across our club,” he said. “The older guys are going really well and have had a really good season.

“It’s a fun weekend so hopefully everyone has a smile on their face.”
