NEW KING OF LIONS

PBC NAME NEW CAPTAIN:

- TOM BOSWELL @TomBoswellGCB

PALM Beach Currumbin have found the man to take over from Jesse Derrick who has captained the club for the past five years.

Stephen Thynne has become sole captain of Palm Beach Currumbin’s QAFL side but says he won’t hesitate to lean on the likes of former skipper Derrick and the rest of the leaders.

Thynne last year was Lions co-captain with Derrick, who has chosen to stand down from the role after five seasons at the helm.

Derrick remains at the club and Thynne, 25, said he would be a vital sounding board along with vice-captains Tom Thynne, 23 and Tyler Cornish, 24, and leader Nick Crowley, 26.

“I’m really proud to take over,” Thynne said. “I have been working closely with Jesse for the last couple of years as vice-captain and then co-captain last year.

“I’m really excited to take over and hopefully I can lead the team to another premiership.

“It’s going to be good to have Jesse there and blokes like (Jason Burge) and Jack Emblem who all have so much experience.

“Jason captained at Southport and Jacko has been a leader and played a high level.”

Palm Beach Currumbin’s leadership group was announced on Tuesday night at training and coach Jess Sinclair said Thynne was a popular choice.

“He is a real vocal leader out on the field,” he said.
