Volare’s Slipper mission

- NATHAN EXELBY

QUEENSLAND’S chances of having a genuine Golden Slipper contender will be known after unbeaten filly Vincere Volare takes on a few of the top seeds in the Reisling Stakes at Randwick tomorrow.

Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan will test the I Am Invincible filly against Magic Millions winner Exhilarates, her unbeaten stablemate Tenley, Sweet Embrace Stakes winner Anaheed and impressive trial winner Wayupinthesky.

Vincere Volare is unbeaten in two starts, winning both by good margins.

Gollan said she had done everything right since her firstup win and tomorrow will tell him “who’s who in the zoo”.

Vincere Volare needs to finish top two or three to assure herself a place in the Golden Slipper.

“I’d love to have another runner in the Slipper, for the second year in a row, but you also don’t want to be there just making up the numbers,” Gollan said.

“It’s hard to get a line on the form down there because they seem to be taking it in turns a bit. My only line is through Garibaldi, who ran well down there and she (Vincere Volare) is a more professional twoyear-old than him. I think she’s there to run well.”

In the 62-year history of the Golden Slipper, Queensland boasts just the two winners – Calaway Gal (2002) and Phelan Ready (2009), who both ran second in their final leadup runs.

Vincere Volare is aiming to become the first Queensland-trained filly to win the Reisling since Military Rose (2010) and Pure Energy (2006).

Gollan will be in Sydney tomorrow, but also has a host of top chances at Eagle Farm, headed by Capital Connection, Shalwa and Perfect Witness.

Capital Connection was a dual acceptor and after speaking with jockey Jeff Lloyd, Gollan opted to go to the 1200m race, because he feared being caught three wide if he started in the 1000m race.
