Shorten promises to match $112m for light rail

- ANDREW POTTS

LABOR leader Bill Shorten will today guarantee the Gold Coast light rail will get to Burleigh Heads whoever wins the election.

He is promising to match Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s $112m pledge.

TRUST is a word easily spoken yet harder to deliver. It’s not something easily earned yet can be so easily lost.

Every day, our passionate team of journalists ask you, our readers, to trust us to deliver the most comprehensive and compelling news from across the Gold Coast.

We have asked this of you every day in the 134 years that the Gold

Coast Bulletin has played such a vital role in the community.

Every day, we deliver.

You can trust us to be that voice in the crowd holding our local, state and federal politicians to account. We ask the tough questions because that’s what you expect of us.

We scratch beneath the surface to get to the heart of the story, rather than accept the spin as gospel.

We find the hero lifesavers, the champions of education, and the mums and dads who finish their day jobs and put on their volunteer hats to better our community – and we tell their stories because they deserve to be told.

Our reporters are not faceless writers trawling news sites to “bring you the news”. We’re right there next to you on the beach enjoying the quintessential Gold Coast lifestyle, partying on the Glitter Strip on a Saturday night or keeping score for our children’s weekend sporting match.

Whether it’s Tom Boswell in the stables at the Turf Club, Paul Weston at the latest City Council meeting or Kathleen Skene standing up for our subbies, we’re there working in the community we live in. Our interest in making the Gold Coast a better place to live in isn’t just for our readers, it’s for our families too.

And you can trust us to be there when the story breaks, regardless of the time of day or night – because that’s what we do. We live and breathe the Gold Coast.

Our journalists work harder than they ever have before – because you demand we do. While buying a printed newspaper or picking one up off your lawn first thing in the morning is just as important as it’s ever been, you want to – and expect to - be informed at all times of the day and across digital platforms.

When you sneak in a weekday coffee break at your computer, you turn to us. On the weekend, you want to know the sports result as soon as the whistle is blown, and we’re there to deliver with the push of a button.

One thing that shines brightly in the short amount of time I have had the privilege to edit the Gold Coast Bulletin, is the amazing spirit of togetherness.

As Gold Coasters, we look out for each other. We are always willing to lend a hand to help the person next to us, and do so without any hesitation.

We’re a parochial bunch. Whether it’s cheering on the Suns or Titans, or the local junior soccer team, you can trust us to shout loudly and proudly ‘go Gold Coast!’ - there’s a reason Mayor Tom Tate named his horse that.

We campaign for the Gold Coast, every day. We will remain dogged in our push for the continued extension of the light rail, and in unclogging the congestion of the M1 by keeping the issue front and centre for our politicians.

You can trust us to not take the foot off the pedal (pardon the pun).

We’re committed to the thousands of small businesses who want the Coast to succeed, because it’s success is their livelihoods.

And we’ll continue to fight for better infrastructure that will ensure the Gold Coast and compete on a global scale and secure our future for generations to come.

We’re for the Gold Coast, and we’re for you.
