FLAILING FLAMINGO TAKES OZ TITLE

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

GOLD Coast boxer Jacob Ng knows he still has a lot to learn despite securing his latest coveted belt.

The 24-year-old stopped Glenn Enterina in the sixth round of their fight for the vacant International Boxing Federation Youth Lightweight Title at the Southport Sharks on Saturday night – but it came only after a scare for Ng.

“It was a cracker of a fight, it had everyone on the edge of their seats,” he said.

“I dropped him in the first round. It wasn’t a hectic drop, I dropped him to the canvas and he got an eight count but in the second round he fully dropped me, like really hard. I was out of it. I ended up coming back and fighting on and yeah the ref stopped it in the sixth round because he was taking too much punishment.”

Ng, now 10 from 10, said it was the second time he had to come back from the brink and knows he can’t afford to keep leaving the door open.

“I’m a bit disappointed actually with how it played out. I shouldn’t be getting hit with those shots,” he said.

His Matrix Boxing Gym teammates Demsey McKean and Leo Grant also had wins in a successful Saturday night for the Ashmore club.

Ng, nicknamed The Flamingo, is becoming known as an entertainment machine.

The Australian lightweight champion, as of December, is eyeing another regional title for his next bout on June 8.
