STRENGTH IN UNITY

-

THE past few days have been the toughest for the Gold Coast’s Islamic and New Zealand community in the wake of the mosque massacres back in what is fondly known as the land of the long white cloud.

But the way the Gold Coast – and its many and varied residents of all persuasions including politicians, high-ranking police and many Kiwis who have settled over here – has come out in support and wrapped our collective arms around them should be commended.

The senseless killings of the now 50 men, women and children across the two mosques in southern city Christchurch late last week demonstrated the absolute worst of humanity.

This past weekend on the Gold Coast showed the best of humanity when more than a thousand visited the Gold Coast’s mosque on Saturday to show their support.

Furthermore, hundreds have turned up to watch a group of local Kiwis perform a spirited and moving haka in Surfers Paradise yesterday.

There were emotional scenes at both, with local MP Sam O’Connor moved to tears by the outpouring of grief and love at the Arundel Mosque.

The powerful performance of the haka in the city’s heart sent chills through the large crowd.

It will be a tough road ahead for many people directly and indirectly affected by the terrorist attack on New Zealand soil.

But if this weekend’s support and kindness is anything to go by that road may become a little less harrowing to travel down with the support of our community and unity on display.
