TSS CLOSE ON TITLE

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

THE Southport School has moved to within a whisker of defending its GPS first XI cricket title after left-arm spinner Peter Lynch bowled his side to victory against Gregory Terrace.

Between delays in play for intermittent rain on Saturday, TSS scraped their way to 167 on the back of wicketkeeper-batsman Cody Durante’s 55 before rolling the visitors for 91 all out. Ky Newitt was exceptional with the new ball, finishing with figures of 2-12 off eight overs, but it was Lynch who did the bulk of the damage, claiming 5-18 off seven.

The 17-year-old had only taken three wickets in the previous six rounds but has proven consistently hard to score off, registering a 3.03 economy rate.

“I think it was just the pressure that got to GT in the second half of the game,” Lynch said. “The ball was getting a bit soggy and it was skidding on a bit so it was just a bit harder for them.”

Of his own performance, he said: “I seemed to bowl it in the right spots. I can’t say there were any magic balls or anything.”

TSS now are 10 points ahead of their nearest rivals Terrace and Nudgee College – who suffered a shock loss to Brisbane Grammar School – with two rounds remaining.

With three points to come for their Round 9 bye, TSS will secure the premiership if they can beat Ipswich Grammar School next weekend.

Even if they lose that match, Terrace are now officially out of the hunt and Nudgee would need to win their remaining two games and pick up at least one bonus point to get their hands on the trophy.
