Pastor and bar doing bit for NZ

THE Gold Coast is reaching out in the wake of the Christchurch mosque massacre, bathing landmarks in orange for Harmony Day and a bar is donating a brunch event profits to families of victims.

The Surfers Paradise sign and Bundall’s HOTA building will be lit up orange – the official colour of Harmony Day – tonight as a declaration of unity.

Surfers Paradise bar restaurant White Rhino will also donate profits – an estimated $20,000 – from this Sunday’s ladies brunch to a New Zealand victims’ families fund.

The $49 brunch, co-hosted by former Married at First Sight star Davina Rankin, kicks off from 11am with space for 500 people.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said he was filled with “sorrow” when he learned of the shootings last Friday.

But despite security stepped up at a city mosque at Arundel, Cr Tate insisted the Gold Coast was still a safe place.

“What they felt over there, we felt it back here,” he said.

“(The Gold Coast) is not less safe. You don’t let something like this stop us. We should enjoy our lifestyle, freedom and celebrate diversity.

“We’re a support agency so any group that is reaching out we will help. As far as future security goes, that’s largely federal and state government.

“Our community and public areas council owns are up to scratch as far as security is concerned.”

The Forward Church of Upper Coomera and Logan has a large Kiwi population in its 1000-strong congregation.

Cr Tate yesterday met Senior Pastor Daniel Tiaiti, who left Wellington in 2013. Mr Tiaiti said his people were still coming to terms with the tragedy.

“I’ve had members catch a plane to Christchurch to ensure family members are safe but even those who don’t have family are indirectly affected because it is our home. It’s incited lots of emotions of fear, anger and sadness,” he said.

“We’re doing our best to come together. Our congregation are doing well in that regard but it’s certainly not without its challenge.”

Harmony Day activities on the Gold Coast today include Southport Library cultural shows from 11am to 1pm.
