Parole in May after laundry list of crimes

- LEA EMERY

THE brother of an accused bikie who was shot eight times will remain behind bars after a six-month crime spree left him facing about 100 charges.

Volkhan Suleyman Turkyilmaz, 28, pleaded guilty in the Southport District Court yesterday to the laundry list of charges, including assault occasioning bodily harm, deprivation of liberty, burglary and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He trapped his former wife in her car and threatened her while the children were on the back seat in one incident. He also led police on an hour-ana-half-long chase on the M1 at Ormeau.

Turkyilmaz also broke into a Benowa home and stole $3000 cash, mobile phones and the keys of a ute.

He was also found with 77 counterfeit $20 notes.

The majority of his crimes took place between July 2017 and January last year.

Turkyilmaz is the younger brother of Gokhan Turkyilmaz, a former MMA fighter who was shot in the groin in front of his Upper Coomera home last month.

Police believe the alleged member of the Rebels was involved in a bikie-related shooting at Logan Hyperdome on February 4.

Gokhan did not attend court yesterday for his brother’s sentencing.

Volkhan Turkyilmaz was behind bars waiting sentence while the drama with his brother played out.

Judge Julie Dick yesterday sentenced him to four years in prison, with parole eligibility on May 5.

Volkhan Turkyilmaz has been in custody since January last year.

“This was a real spree of criminality,” she said. “It just went on and on and there were some very serious aspects.”

Judge Dick said when Turkyilmaz’s marriage broke up he “imploded”.

“The fact of the matter is a large number of people were hurt by your behaviour.”

Defence barrister Damien Gates, instructed by Dib and Associates, said Turkyilmaz had witnessed his father abusing his mother throughout his childhood.

He said Turkyilmaz as a child had lived with his mother in a women’s shelter.

Outside court, Turkyilmaz’s solicitor Danielle Heable, of Dib and Associates, said he was looking forward to moving on. “Mr Turkyilmaz is relieved his matters have finalised, and is eager to serve the remainder of his sentence so he can move forward and ... focus on his children,” she said.
