Currumbin’s ‘not interested’ in national title
EVERY time the Aussies roll around there is one question on everyone’s lips.
Who will be the club who ends Northcliffe’s 15-year overall pointscore club championship streak?
Despite finishing third at the recent Queensland Surf Life Saving Championships, Currumbin lead coach Michael King isn’t eyeing off a national title.
“The pointscore is of no interest to me,” he said.
“We don’t put too much emphasis on the overall pointscore but rather focus on individuals and ways to better each and every athlete.
“As a club we want to be able to fulfil our potential and work as a team and club to do the best that we can.”
King said that the recent state championships on the Gold Coast were fundamental to the club’s preparation for this week.
“At states the other week our goal was to do as many races as possible to get a feel for the conditions,” he said.
“We were really happy with our results (at the state championships).
“There’s nothing like race conditions so that was an important part of our program but we’ll only go up to Kurrawa a few days before.”
After leaving Mooloolaba in 2015, the former ironman revealed it took some time to establish himself at the Vikings but now he is relishing the

“It’s a lot harder than thought,” he said.
“I was walking into a club that is rich in history so there was a bit of transition period where I had to give and take and so did the club but we’ve got a good balance now.
“We want our athletes to come in and train hard and race hard but also enjoy racing.” I
