Opals to hit Coast court

- with Joel McInnes

AUSTRALIA’S national women’s team, the Opals, will train on the Gold Coast from April 8-14.

The team will be involved in training sessions at the Gold Coast Sport and Leisure Centre at Carrara as well as media commitments while they are in town.

The Opals have had many training camps on the Coast over the years and will have Aussie Hoops-based sessions with Gold Coast juniors.

There is also an open session for select coaches.

The team could have US WNBA players the calibre of Elizabeth Cambage, Leilani Mitchell, Cayla George, Rebecca Allen and Sami Whitcomb attending the camp because their season doesn’t start until May this year.

Coach Sandy Brondello will be looking for this group to be the first to finally beat USA in a major tournament at the World Cup in Thailand this year.

The Opals head off to Bangkok for the worlds, which are on from July 20-28. GOLD Coast Basketball will have a special presentation at Carrara Indoor Stadium on Thursday, April 18, to celebrate 60 years of basketball in this city.

With the growth of basketball on the Gold Coast at an all-time high, the event should be a great night for former players and legends to gather around and swap old war stories.

The event will take place on the Carrara floor, home to the first NBL team on the Gold Coast.

It is free entry for all on the night.
