Seahawks stock up with talent

- ELIZA REILLY

THE North Gold Coast Seahawks are aiming to soar into playoffs this season and may just do so thanks to some strong recruiting.

After finishing second-last in the 2018 Queensland Basketball League, the Seahawks have looked to add talent and experience – and they have found both in Robert Linton.

Born and raised in Coffs Harbour, Linton most recently played for the Frankston Blues in Victoria and was a development player at the Adelaide 36ers before the Seahawks swooped ahead of their second season in Queensland’s premier basketball league.

“We’ve announced him as our captain,” coach Adam Tyrus said, revealing the impact the 28-year-old had already had on the playing group. “He’s really experienced and has played all over Australia.

“He shoots the ball really well, which was an area we struggled with last year.”

The Seahawks have looked overseas to build their playing roster with Tyrus offering American point guard Earl Jone his first overseas contract.

“He actually went to college with our assistant coach so that’s how we got in contact,” Tyrus said.

“He’s a smaller, stronger point guard who shoots the ball really well. He’s a tenacious defender and we think he’s a really good fit for us.”

The club have also lured Gold Coast Roller Brent Wallace to the nest which could spark some friendly fire when the sides meet in Round 6.

“He’s a big guy who’s probably in the best shape he’s ever been in,” Tyrus said. “We’re excited to see what he can bring.”

Import Quentin Campbell will return and the Seahawks will also feature local Cameron Goldfinch, who now plays for Newman University in the US , point guard Sasha Lomakin and recruit Tom Howard.

The Seahawks play their first game on April 26.
