SEARCH ON TO FIND NEXT BIRRELL

- With Leanne Evans

THE Tennis Gold Coast summer fixtures finals were marred by rain but that didn’t stop a number of divisions completing their season at the weekend.

Junior sections 1-6 and Green Ball 4 completed matches at Queens Park in Southport, with all other divisions due back on Saturday to play unfinished matches.

Tennis Gold Coast fixtures are an interclub competition for open and junior players and are played in a home and away format involving 20 tennis clubs across the Gold Coast.

Teams have two players who play a singles fixture then a doubles, with many teams having a reserve player. Saturday fixtures average 136 teams over 17 grades (about 70-90 players).

Teams are submitted by a player’s home club, helping to foster competition across the city. Gold Coast’s upand-coming star Kimberly Birrell was a regular in the fixtures competition while she was honing her skills.

“Saturday fixtures is a great opportunity for young players to join a club team and compete in a safe environment as you continue to develop your game through many years to come as a player,” she said.

“When I look back now, fixtures gave me a wonderful opportunity to practise the key points that I was working on throughout the week in training. I always played with a friend and we had a lot of fun.”

Fixtures offers players the crucial ingredient to improve and practise their game through regular matches.

If you’re wanting to put your coaching lessons into practice and prepare for your next tournament, there is no better recipe than playing regular matches which are suitable for your standard.
