Juniors run riot at state carnival
RECORD-BREAKING Gold Coast have cemented their position as the state’s basketball powerhouse after bringing home a mighty medal haul at the under-16 state championships in Logan.
For the first time in history, the Gold Coast girls and boys Waves teams took out both Division 1 gold medals.
The under-16 championships represents the largest contingent of teams (eight) that Gold Coast Basketball has entered into one age group at a state titles.
Gold Coast District Association general manager Joel McInnes lauded the performance of all teams.
“The Gold Coast Waves girls’ team that has a majority of bottom age girls from the under-14 nationals club champions (from last year) continued their domination with a crushing win against the home team South West Pirates 99-35,” he said.
“As throughout the tournament, scoring was shared by the whole team in an incredible display.
“The Gold Coast Waves boys won 100-76 on the back of great performances from Kobe McDowell-White (eight threes and 31 points) and Joshua Wolff (24 points).
“The future is incredibly bright for basketball on the Gold Coast. I look forward to continued success.”
The North Gold Coast Seahawks, who fielded three teams at the championships, got in on the gold rush with their Division 4 boys going undefeated and beating the Rockhampton Jets 104-64 in the final.
The Gold Coast Rollers boys claimed bronze in Division 3. The Australian Under-16 Championships will be in Darwin in July.
