COMPETITORS TUMBLE AS COAST REIGNS SUPREME
GOLD Coast’s reputation as a gymnastics stronghold has been reinforced after some standout performances at the senior state championships and state team trial.
Four Gold Coast clubs – Miami’s Gold Coast Gymnastics Club, Southport Gymnastics, Super Performance Centre at Ashmore and The Southport School Gymnastics Club – were among the 40-plus squads to take part in Brisbane.
Categories included men’s artistic gymnastics, women’s artistic gymnastics and acrobatic gymnastics disciplines, which showcased the athletes’ prowess.
Gold Coast Gymnastics’ Michael Tone, who competed at the Commonwealth Games, placed first in the all-around MAG results with a score of 80.732.
Hudson Irwin, from Super Performance Centre, was second with a score of 75.581, while clubmate David Tanner was third with a score of 74.198.
In the women’s allaround division, Premier Gymnastics’ Georgia-Rose Brown claimed the title (53.850) ahead of fellow Gold Coast talent Georgia Godwin (Delta Gymnastics, 52.050).
Gymnastics Queensland CEO Kym Dowdell said the four-day event saw more than 375 of the state’s best athletes compete for the title of Queensland champion.
“This is one of the most important competitions on the state gymnastics calendar, with gymnasts competing to be named in the Queensland state team for the upcoming Australian national gymnastics championships held in Melbourne from May 20,” she said.
