- ASHLEIGH HARTLEY AND EMILY HALLORAN

Gold Coast teens will tackle all manner of obstacles in the embRACE event – having fun while helping to raise money for the PCYC DOZENS of Gold Coast teens are preparing to compete in the ultimate fun challenge.

The Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) is hosting its second event called embRACE.

About 1500 youths and families are expected to take part in a 5.5km obstacle course held at PCYC Beenleigh on Sunday, June 9.

Those competing get to take part in a range of “challenging” activities, one of them being the task of getting through a giant inflatable course.

The annual event is to raise money for PCYC. The funds will help the clubs deliver programs and activities and support

young people in the local community.

Dozens of locals will be competing from the PCYC Ashmore, including 16-year-old Zack Maradeen. For Zack, his favourite part is working with his mates from the club.

“PCYC embRACE gives us the opportunity to have fun while enjoying the community spirit that PCYC Queensland offers,” he said.

“(It) gets us involved in an outdoor activity and brings us together as a team.”

PCYC Ashmore program co-ordinator Deborah James said the teens had been training hard for the event and she was proud of the youth team’s commitment and passion.

“Our youth team decided to work on their strength and fitness together as a team to train for PCYC embRACE,” she said. “I am proud of them working together towards a goal and staying motivated.”

Those participating in the event will get to choose from three start times — 8am, 9am, and 10am — and can enjoy one hour and complete as many laps as they can of the embRACE challenge.

There will be plenty more activities on the day from a rock wall to climb, jumping castles, entertainment and police demonstrations.

10 News First Brisbane sports presenter and PCYC Queensland Youth Ambassador Jonathon Williams will be hosting on the day.

“I’m behind PCYC Queensland as an avid supporter of sport for positive choice, and PCYC embRACE is a great all-ages event that provides a fun challenge embodying the spirit of fun and fitness,” he said.

PCYC Queensland chief executive Phil Schultz said it was an important event that represented who they were as an organisation.

“PCYC embRACE embodies all that our organisation has to offer ... supporting families and the community to stay active and healthy through sport for positive choice,” he said.

“Our signature fundraising event enables us to grow awareness and raise muchneeded funds to ensure that we are able to deliver on our vision of building safer, healthier communities through youth development.”
