Training camp courts next generation

- with Leanne Evans

THE sun was shining, the courts equipped, the coaches prepared, the parents intrigued and the players excited.

For what? The first regional training squad the Gold Coast ever did see!

Held at Queens Park Tennis Centre in Southport, the training squad took place last Sunday morning and saw 52 up and coming junior players and 10 coaches from across the Coast take to the courts.

The players, aged 10 and younger and of an ANZ tennis

Hot Shots orange ball and green ball standard, were selected to take part in the morning through their club coach.

The kids got to experience all elements of an elite training schedule in just one morning by putting in the paces on court with specifically tailored tennis drills and skills as well as off court with fitness, strength and conditioning exercises.

The new initiative sees coaches from across the region working with each other and their performance players to train in a squad environment under Tennis Australia’s development professionals.

Each squad has been carefully positioned around the competition calendar and deemed either a pre-tournament preparation session or a post-tournament learning and skill development opportunity.

For the kids, it is an opportunity to train with other passionate and dedicated players in their age group and work together to develop each other’s game. And for their parents, it is an opportunity to learn and understand the foundations which support the pathway their player is following.

With the next generation of players and coaches putting in the hard work, the future of tennis on the Coast remains in good hands… or racquets.
