STORMTROOPER JOINS REBELLION OVER ROAD SAFETY

- EMILY HALLORAN emily.halloran@news.com.au

ONE of the Gold Coast parents frustrated at not having a crossing at their school is dressing as a Star Wars stormtrooper to help kids over the road and draw attention to the issue.

Clear Island Waters dad Rob Wiseman has been putting on his white armour after wife Sally claims she spent months asking for a crossing near St Vincent’s Primary School.

Mr Wiseman plans to keep helping students cross in his distinctive costume in the lead up to Star Wars Day this Saturday, May the 4th (Be With You).

Mrs Wiseman contacted area councillor Bob La Castra on January 16 before school started back but said she was yet to be updated on any progress. Cr La Castra disputes this.

“For years, a zebra crossing on Fairways Dve has been rejected for the children at St Vincent’s Primary School by the City of Gold Coast,” Mrs Wiseman said.

The school has 800 students and staff, hundreds of people attend a nearby church and there are 200 kids at neighbouring Kool Kids early learning centre

“Fairways Dve has become a danger with multiple near misses of traffic and kids each week,” she said.

“I have followed it up five times on email and called twice. All I was asking for was an ETA.”

Mrs Wiseman said she was disappointed by the lack of contact from Cr La Castra whose only response had been email from his personal assistant.

“I’ve been told he doesn’t and won’t use social media,” she said.

“Other councillors share what they are doing for their area and they actively keep in touch with people.

“I don’t know what he’s doing for us. I’d just like to know what the focus is.”

Cr La Castra hit back last night calling it “complete rubbish”.

“It’s been 10 weeks since the initial request,” he said. “I have acted on it, asked for an investigation and have communicated with her.

“I have been proactive and have a good relationship with the school. I’m waiting to hear back. It needs to meet the state requirements. It needs to be made safe.”
