STUDENTS TO JOIN ANTI-ADANI ACTION

STUDENTS are set to skip school later this week to bolster a line of activists snaking its way around the office of McPherson MP Karen Andrews as part of a national protest.

Stop Adani Gold Coast has announced that the Climate Crisis Rally will be held on Friday outside the federal politician’s headquarters on Watts Dve, Varsity Lakes. It will coincide with 60 events nationwide and 500 worldwide.

About 100 people have indicated they plan to take part in the Gold Coast protest, to be held between 11am and 1pm.

The action is to protest against the planned Adani Carmichael mine in the Galilee Basin, Central Queensland – the longstanding target of the nationwide #StopAdani movement.

Those taking part in the protest will demand 100 per cent renewable energy use in Australia by 2030 and the end of fossil fuels.

In early April, dozens of members of Stop Adani Gold Coast conga-lined their way to Ms Andrews’ office, but she was not in the office at the time.

At that time, the Minister for Industry, Science and Technology told the Bulletin she welcomed the views of constituents, but she would not be drawn on the Adani mine or the protest.

Students as young as seven also protested outside Ms Andrews’ office at a controversial rally in mid-March.

Also as part of Friday’s planned action, protesters will phone and email McPherson candidates and other politicians to push their message.

Stop Adani Gold Coast spokesman Matthew Ross said it was “outrageous for our politicians to help Adani open up one of the largest untapped coal reserves on the planet when they know that burning coal is the number one cause of dangerous climate change”.
