LIONS HAVE NO ANSWER TO DEMONS

- TOM BOSWELL

SURFERS Paradise coach Brad Moore concedes it’s hard to see anyone stopping Palm Beach Currumbin winning a third straight QAFL crown after watching his side become the latest to be thumped the Lions.

Palm Beach Currumbin beat the Demons 20.10 (130) to 6.7 (43) at Salk Oval on Saturday in what was a topof-the-table clash that many predicted would provide the Lions with a timely test.

A five-goal second quarter had the Demons within 18 points at half time but from there it was one-way traffic.

Palm Beach Currumbin boast an average winning margin of 69 points after their first five games of the season.

Moore said the Lions of 2019 were an even better side than those that won the past two QAFL flags but, despite struggling to picture anyone matching them, declared they wouldn’t stop in their pursuit of the title.

“They are very even across the ground and they are a formidable opponent,” Moore said.

“It will take a lot of work to get up to their level.

“We played well below our best but that is due to the way they prevented us from playing.

“They are the benchmark, they are a long way ahead of the rest of the competition.

“But I will say we are confident we can take a lot of lessons out of it and look to see where we need to improve and how we can combat against them. Footy is a funny thing. On any given day if you are just off a little bit you can take advantage but at the moment they are a long way ahead of the rest of the competition when they are at their best.”

Palm Beach Currumbin Jess Sinclair said the response from his midfield group after halftime proved the difference to a team he was determined to stop buying into their own hype.

“We are in good form at the minute but you have to hit form when it matters,” Sinclair said.

“We are really pleased and excited with the way things are going but we know in footy if you start getting too far ahead of yourself you get smacked between the eyes.

“A lot can change in a few weeks. A couple injuries or your form wavers and all of a sudden you are back to the pack. TOMORROW: BROADBEACH

“I said to the boys after the game: ‘Let’s not start getting ahead of ourselves and thinking we are better than what we are.’

“We have a lot of guys in good form but we need to make sure we are training and working hard so we can keep reaping the rewards.”
