TIGER TURNS TABLES ON ADELAIDE
FOUR-TIME Adelaide Football League representative Alex McKay is poised to play against the team he vice-captained last year.
The Labrador recruit has been named in the 42-man QAFL squad ahead of the competition’s representative match against the Adelaide Football League on June 8 at Voxson Oval.
McKay, a former Tea Tree Gully division one player, first represented the Adelaide Football League in an under-23 carnival in 2015 where he was named best on ground in the grand final.
The now 26-year-old helped the senior representative side beat Victoria in 2016 before featuring in the 2017 game against South Australia Country and 2018 fixture against Victoria.
The midfielder, who has been among the Tigers best in most matches this season so far, said he was excited to turn the tables and play against his former teammates while representing Queensland.
“I’ll be coming up against players I played with at last year’s local club and it will be good to see them,” McKay said. “I’m excited for the opportunity to represent Queensland rather than South Australia.
“If you said to me this
time last year that would be happening then I would have laughed at you because I thought I was never going to leave South Australia but I’ve been loving it here in Queensland.”
McKay has enjoyed a smooth transition into Queensland football, declaring both leagues were on par when it came to quality.
“It’s very similar to be honest,” McKay said of the two competitions. “The styles are very similar too, it’s free-flowing football.
“The ball probably moved a bit quicker back home and if you make a mistake back home it’s probably a bit more costly than here.”
McKay is one of four Tigers players in the QAFL squad, with Jaicob Kenny, Sam Walker and Dane Watmuff also earning a spot.
