Young calls it quits at struggling Labrador

- TOM BOSWELL

LABRADOR Tigers senior football manager Peter Young has quit the struggling club less than halfway through the current QAFL season.

Young will leave Labrador at the end of this week, a yearand-a-half after joining the Tigers in one of the most senior positions at the club.

The experienced footy mentor said he was leaving to take up a new job opportunity and dismissed speculation his exit was linked to the club’s fall from grace and internal angst at list management.

The Tigers won QAFL premierships in 2015 and 2016 and lost the 2017 grand final before finishing seventh with a record of 4-12 last year. They have started the 2019 season 2-4.

“I’ve just had enough of footy,” Young said.

“I’ve been in footy for a long time, over 30 years. I worked for the AFL for a number of years and I was in Adelaide coaching in the SANFL and country footy. It takes its toll and controls your life.”

Young backed the recruitment of Alex McKay, Ben Fagan, Hugo Barry and John Boxer.

Young said the club was on the right path and would improve further when some of their best return from injury including Billy Hicks, Jake Goldsmith, Dylan MacCombie and Rhys Coombe.

“I think it’s a good list,” Young said.

“We are well under the points system compared to everyone else and everyone thought we would be well over the salary cap and we are well short of it. We have brought good juniors into the club.”

Labrador president Nick McGuire said the club was in no rush to find a replacement.
