Backing up is key for Cats

BROADBEACH’S 120-point QAFL win over Wilston Grange was some of the most attractive football played by the club this season.

But coach Beau Zorko has called on his players to avoid falling in love with what they produced in the 26.12 (168) to 7.6 (48) win and reset as they chase a repeat performance next week following their fluctuating recent form.

The Cats beat Labrador in Round 6, lapsed against Morningside last week and bounced back to put Wilston Grange to the sword on Saturday at Subaru Oval.

It came after a quiet first quarter that had Broadbeach trailing by 12 points before the Cats took control.

“(Wilston Grange) came out with some really good intensity and effort and we didn’t quite match it early,” Zorko said.

“We weren’t as composed under pressure as we would have liked to be and we had to refocus at quarter time.

“We made a couple of small changes (structurally but it was more about where our focus needed to be.

“We were really disappointed after last week so it was nice to hit back.

“Now we have one more before the break so it’s important we rock up next week (against Sandgate) and keep our focus on the task at hand.

“It was good to put a team away and build our confidence and know the level of football is in us.

“The next challenge is to not fall in love with what we have done and hit the reset button next week to make sure those little things we are training happen again.”

Jake Hinds (five goals) and Jason Cloke (four goals) were the biggest winners of the team’s dominance but the Cats had an even spread, with 12 players slotting majors.

Meanwhile, Palm Beach Currumbin beat Labrador 14.8 (92) to 9.12 (66) at Salk Oval on Saturday, with the absence of injured forward Jack Anthony, who is out with an ankle injury, failing to reduce their scoring power.

Surfers Paradise had a bye.
