Tom and Gerry join forces to snare mare

IT shared the same drama as the famous cartoon Tom and Jerry and now racing’s version of the duo has landed the prized mare Global Glamour for $1.55 million.

Magic Millions co-owner Gerry Harvey and Coolmore Australia boss Tom Magnier went into partnership for the five-year-old, who went under the hammer for the highest price on day two of the Broodmare Sales at Bundall yesterday.

“Coolmore wanted that horse come hell or high water,” Mr Harvey said.

“Coolmore instigated this, I didn’t. Over the last day or two we have been talking about it.

“Tom went behind my back and rang Katie (PageHarvey) first. I had no choice because she said ‘if Coolmore want you as a partner, you are going to be a partner’.”

Magnier said Global Glamour would be sent to breed with Coolmore stallion Justify at their farm in NSW’s Hunter Region.

The Gai Waterhousetrained mare amassed $1,561,400 in prizemoney after being bought for $65,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Yearling Sale by the all-female syndicate of It’s All About The Girls.

Forty women from the syndicate bought into the horse, with the owners scattered across Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, England, France, America and Malaysia.

Among the owners was the Gold Coast’s Nicole Cox, wife of former Magic Millions CEO Vin Cox, who had a 2.5 per cent share in the horse.

Cox was ringside with around 10 other owners when the mare was sold in an emotional final farewell.

“We were also a bit sad to see her go. She is a beautiful horse and has been so great to us,” she said.

“The journey with her has been so fun.

“We went into her because of the (Magic Millions $500,000) women’s bonus.

“We just thought we would have a bit of fun with her and she went way beyond our expectations.”

Ms Page-Harvey labelled the 40 women involved with Global Glamour visionaries.

“I will be forever grateful to these extraordinary women who are Global Glamour,” she said.

“Their support of Magic Millions Racing Women in the early days means everything.

“Their support, coupled with their expert eye, has delivered them $3.11 million.

“It is why Magic Millions means everything to me.

“The horses bring us together – from all over the world.”

The sales have now grossed $54.8 million over the first two days, with the average price so far $146,914 from 373 lots sold.

The top-priced mare remains Missrock, who sold for $2.3 million on Tuesday.
