League, basketball on the agenda

-

TWO other programs that will be starting shortly are rugby league and basketball, both of which are open to boys and girls.

The Academy has opened up registrations for the league program, which will be conducted from the Robina Raptors fields under the guidance of Jason Burkhardt.

Jason has extensive experience having a senior club coach qualification and working with Neil Henry developing players skills and drills.

He also assists with developing coaches to deliver programs to younger age groups in the sport.

The program begins in late July, will be held every Sunday morning from 9-10.30am and will work on developing basic skills and teamwork.

It is hoped that a small match will be played in late October so players are able to put their skills into practice.

The basketball program is set to begin on July 23 and will run through to September 10.

Sessions will be held on Tuesday afternoons from 4-5.30pm at Carrara stadium.

The program will be led by Thalo Green, who has been involved with junior development for many years.

His passion and experience extends from his early playing days in the US to competition in the local NBL.

The Gold Coast Academy of Sport will also be conducting some athletic clinics during the upcoming holidays in early July.

As high jump is not taught at all schools, we thought it appropriate to do a “Kangaroo clinic” on July 1-2 where we will cover high jump, long jump and triple jump.

On July 3- 4 we will conduct a speed clinic covering sprints and starts to help improve sprinting technique.

For any athletes who would like to learn more about hurdles this will be covered too. We hope this will help to improve skills for upcoming carnivals.
