Shearers have no answers to Eagles

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

BILAMBIL caused another big upset, while Currumbin put in a clinical display to return to the winners’ circle.

The Eagles last weekend went close to becoming the first Rugby League Gold Coast A-grade team to beat Burleigh in 2019, losing 22-20.

They responded by putting up a clean sheet against Ormeau in a 36-0 victory on Saturday.

“We started slow against Burleigh the week before and it cost us the game to be honest so we had a big focus on making sure that we started the game well,” Currumbin coach Ryan Gundry said.

“It was just a matter of getting into the rhythm and the grind of the game and just making sure that all the things that we worked on during the week we were putting into place and we did that in the first 25 minutes and the scoreboard reflected that. It was 24-0 at halftime.”

Having been the early frontrunners last year before dropping away, Gundry has been pleased with Currumbin’s in-season progress.

“We’re coming from the other end of the spectrum this year, which is pleasing and we’re still sitting third,” he said.

“A big goal for us is to finish in that top two so that’s where all of our energies are lying at the moment, just making sure that we can give ourselves every opportunity to have that home semi-final.”

Down at Bilambil yesterday, the Jets beat secondplaced Southport for the second time this season, this time by a scoreline of 32-12. Burleigh accounted for Runaway Bay 32-20.

Meanwhile, in the NRL Women’s Championship at Pizzey Park, South East Queensland finished their tournament with a 16-16 draw against Queensland Country.

NSW City defeated NSW Country 34-4 in the final to take out the title.
