Biannual sale frenzy tipped

- AMBER MACPHERSON

BARGAIN hunters unite – Harbour Town has a sale for the penny pincher in all of us.

The Biggera Waters discount outlet shopping centre will celebrate its biannual Get Outlet sale from today until Sunday, with prices slashed on already reduced price big-name brands.

Harbour Town marketing manager Rebecca Stevenson said customers marked their calendars for the crazy deals that come around twice a year.

“People await this event every year in June and November,” she said.

“They know even though we’re an outlet, the weekend is the opportunity for them to get the best sales and even better deals at one time.”

Customers can expect huge discounts on current season stock, so there will be plenty of opportunities to pick up winter warmers.

“Bond and Adidas are already outlet prices every day, so they’ll take an extra 30 or 40 per cent off their prices, which means you’ll see 60 to 70 per cent off retail price,” Ms Stevenson said.

“People think that because it’s a sale it means it’s second best or out of date, that’s not the case.

“I’m definitely seeing some winter stock in stores at the moment, you’re not shopping products that are a year old.”

As the end of the financial year draws nearer, Bond University marketing associate professor Stephen Holden says the corporate calendar shouldn’t typically impact sales – but it does.

“End of financial year I would have thought only works for businesses, not retail, but you ask a shopper and they’ll go ‘hell, I’ve no idea how end of financial year works for me but I’m glad it does,” he said.

“You can draw parallels in the United States with their Black Saturday sales, which is the day after Thanksgiving, our equivalent is Boxing Day.”

Ms Stevenson’s best tips for making the most of the day include arriving early, parking in the west side car park and, of course, wearing comfortable shoes.

“Getting a carpark later in the day is tricky. Most people drive in off the Gold Coast Highway but the bulk of the parking is on the west side of the centre,” she said.

“Get in early, hit up some of the bigger brands first because they seem to have the longer lines as the day goes on.”
