A GIANT childcare will be built as part Gold Coast’s next shopping centre.

The Sunkids childcare centre, a 4460sq m circular building, will be part of Sunland’s $1.3 billion The Lakes precinct which is under construction. Targeted for a site on the corner of Hooker and Lakeview boulevards in Mermaid Waters, the single-storey building will offer space for 162 children across nine rooms. centre of the major

A development application has been submitted to the Gold Coast City Council for the building, which is expected to create 28 jobs once completed.

It has been welcomed by council planning boss Cr Cameron Caldwell who said it would help accommodate the growing need for childcare facilities in the area.

“There is an increasing need for well-located childcare services,” he said.

“The growth in the locality demands this project and Council will assess this application to ensure it meets our City Plan requirements.” Documents filed with the council say the project will become Sunkids’ flagship centre. It is expected to operate from 6am to 6pm daily.

Around 1415 sqm, or 32 per cent of the site, will be used to create an outdoor play area designed for different age groups.

The Sunland development is gradually taking shape.

The developer announced in December last year the latest stage of the mega development – a $250 million fourtower boutique residential project. Called The Lanes Residences, the four midrise buildings would look over the newly named Lake Unity in Clear Island Waters.

The $250 million towers would feature 298 luxury one, two and three-bedroom apartments on the corner of Bermuda St and Hooker Boulevard, and would be home to more than 500 people. It will go to market in the second half of the year.

It will sit alongside the $200 million Lanes Shopping Centre and Lakes residential precinct.

The shopping centre project will be built on six hectares and feature 80 shops – cafes, restaurants, a fresh food hall, health and wellbeing services and a boutique cinemas – across 17,000sq m.

THE GROWTH IN THE LOCALITY DEMANDS THIS PROJECT AND COUNCIL WILL ASSESS THIS APPLICATION TO ENSURE IT MEETS OUR CITY PLAN REQUIREMENTS
