Sherriff rounds up rivals at the Open

ARON Sherriff is chasing his third Australian Open men’s singles title after claiming the trophy in 2010 and 2016.

Sherriff overcame fellow Jackaroo Ben Twist 21-19 in Round 5 and then beat defending champion Ryan Bester 21-16 in the quarters to reach the semi-final.

Sherriff will now do battle with 2015 champion Aaron Teys after he had a mighty comeback from 20-11 down to defeat Queensland junior singles representa­tive Jake Rynne, 15, in his quarter-final.

In the other semi-final, Musgrave Hill’s Gus Templeton – who knocked out Dylan with Brett Wilkie

Skinner from NSW – will take on defending men’s pairs champion Carl Healey (Cabramatta) after he defeated Broadbeach’s Sean Ingham 21-16.

The semi-finals will be on Thursday at Broadbeach with the final on Friday.

The women’s semi-finals will be played at Club Helensvale tomorrow with 2016 champion Natasha Scott taking on NSW teammate Dawn Hayman. The other semi is an all-Victorian final with Tiffany Brodie against Laureen Smith.

Gail Waitai and Bolivia and Cassandra Millerick were the best of the locals reaching the last 16.

The final is scheduled for Thursday at Broadbeach.

The men’s pairs, which are down to the last 32, continue today at Broadbeach, and the quarter-finals of the men’s fours will continue tomorrow at Club Helensvale.

The women’s pairs start post sectional rounds today at Mermaid Beach and Broadbeach, the women’s fours are down to the semi-final tomorrow at Club Helensvale.

The race is on to finish the season as Australia’s No.1 male and female bowler with the Australian Open the last ranking event of the year.

Coming into the Open Corey Wedlock (NSW) led the men’s race but was knocked out in the singles round of 16, though he is still in pairs and fours.

Bester (pairs and fours) and Sherriff (singles and pairs) are hot on his heels.

In the women’s race, Tweed’s Chloe Stewart led coming into the event but bombed out early in the singles, though she is still alive in pairs and fours.

Katelyn Inch (pairs and fours) and Natasha Scott (singles and pairs) may still be within reach.

There is also a bonus prize for the best performed player in the Australian Open according to ranking points acquired in the event.

Under-18 boys/girls singles and over-60 men’s and women’s pairs also commenced this week.

Finals of all events will be at Broadbeach on either Thursday or Friday.
