No flu shot shortage on Coast, say experts

HEALTH experts say there are still flu shots available on the Gold Coast despite reported shortages in some major pharmacies and health centres.

Locals seeking their flu shots this week have told the Bulletin they were unable to be treated due to demand for the vaccinations, but the Queensland Pharmacy Guild said stocks were available.

“There is not a shortage, there is a maldistribution to some businesses,” President Trent Twomey said.

“There has never been shortage.

“Because there has been an increase in those seeking the shot some pharmacies had misjudged the amount they needed to order, customers could call around and find somewhere with stock available.”

According to Mr Twomey extra stock had also been delivered yesterday.

“The public awareness campaign was an outstanding success which has led to high demand,” he said.

Mr Twomey said regulations which allow pharmacists to administer the shots has made it more convenient for people to stay up to date with their treatment.

Gold Coast Health said supplies are also adequate across all hospitals and health services.

“As our flu season usually starts around August/September, the best time to be vaccinated against flu is between April and June,” a spokeswoman said.

“Vaccination usually takes up to two weeks to be effective.”

Free flu vaccination clinics will operate at Robina Library this Saturday from 9am until 1pm and on Saturday June 29 at Pacific Pines State School hall from 9am until 1pm.

The free vaccinations at these clinics are available for anyone who wishes to be protected during the flu season. a
