Angry Adam rues missed Open shot

-

AN emotional Adam Scott has blasted himself for stumbling while in the US Open mix.

But after squandering another chance at the majors, the former world No.1 golfer has vowed to undergo a thorough post-mortem before next month’s British Open.

Scott started the final round at Pebble Beach eight shots off the pace but made a run for the ages – rattling off an eagle and four birdies in a brilliant first 12 holes of his final round.

But that was when the wheels came off in spectacular fashion.

The Gold Coaster flared his tee shot out of bounds right on the 13th hole, which led to a double-bogey six.

The 2013 US Masters winner showed guts by responding with birdie on the par-5 14th, but two three-putt bogeys at the 16th and 17th sealed his fate. At six-under, Scott (68) finished tied for seventh with former British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen (72).

Scott, 38, was devastated. “It’s hard not to have an emotional verdict at the moment, of course I’m very p***ed off with my finish,” he said.

The event was won by Gary Woodland, who said his win was “so special” given his first major title came on American Father’s Day – two years after he and wife endured the tragedy of a stillborn child.

Woodland admitted 2017 was the “toughest year of (his) life by far” and played a part in his outpouring of emotion after he drained a 25-foot birdie putt on Pebble Beach’s iconic 18th green yesterday.

A former college basketball player, Woodland shot a threeunder-par 69 and a 72-hole score of 13-under-par.
