District focus after the fun and Games
AN extremely busy period for bowls on the Gold Coast has finished with State District Sides, State Championships, Australian Open and Asia Pacific Games being run and won.
The Aussies finished off the Asia Pacific Games well, winning four gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
Our women were the overall best performed team just ahead of New Zealand while the Kiwis pipped our men for their best overall trophy.
This was a great warm-up event for host clubs Broadbeach, Musgrave Hill and Club Helensvale who will also host the 2020 World Championships next May.
New Australian Open and Emerging Squads will be announced today before some of the Jackaroos head to the UK on Saturday.
An open and para team will tour the UK this month in early preparations for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Locals Chloe Stewart, Kelsey Cottrell, Tony Bonnell and Jake Fehlberg with director Grant Fehlberg will make the journey. The tour includes games against Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England.
■ NOW it’s time for local competitions with Gold Coast Tweed District Champion of Club Champions Fours starting on the weekend for men and women.
The men are down to the final after Beenleigh’s Ken Ashford, Graeme Shillington, Dale McWhinney-Shillington and Dean McWhinney beat South Tweed in one semi. Tweed Head’s rink of Max Jaffray, Kelvin Kerkow, Kurt Brown and Wayne Turley accounted for Club Helensvale in their semi.
The final will be played on a date yet to be finalised.
The women’s event is down to the semi-finals with Tweed Heads versus Club Helensvale on Friday at Mudgeeraba, and McKenzie Park play Mermaid Beach in the other semi on July 14.

■ Men’s Pennant starts this Saturday with 11 divisions taking to the greens across the District.
■ Women’s pennant commences on Friday with Divisions 2 and 3. Divisions 4, 5 and 6 start the following Friday while Division 1 will start on Saturday, July 13.
■ Queensland qualifying for the Australian Women’s Indoor Singles will be played at Paradise Point and Tweed Heads on Saturday with four women advancing to the main event in August.
■ The men’s District Champion of Club Champion pairs playoffs begin on Sunday at Musgrave Hill.
