GENDER REVEAL GOES UP IN SMOKE

- KIRSTIN PAYNE kirstin.payne@news.com.au

SHOCKING footage of a gender reveal gone horribly wrong has been released by the Queensland Police.

Drone vision taken in April last year shows a young man doing burnouts in front of a cheering crowd at Norwell north of the Gold Coast.

Smoke off the back wheels of the black 2017 Holden Senator sedan was dyed blue, to reveal the gender of the soon to be born child.

The car soon caught fire after travelling approximately 100 metres down Skopps Road.

The crowd can be seen running from the burning wreck, still filming the festivities.

With the car still ablaze the driver was then pulled from the wreck.

Following investigations the police arrested a then 29-year-old Nerang man the day after the event, on April 15 2018.

He was charged him with one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. The matter was finalised in Beenleigh court last year.

Gender reveals have become a popular way to celebrate the upcoming birth of a child, often replacing the traditional baby shower.

The parents are unaware of the gender of the baby until the event, when blue or pink items are uncovered in a surprise manner to family and friends.

Reveals can include, balloon popping, cake cuttings or other quirky displays. Gender reveal car tire burnout kits are sold online for $5-$10 per smoke packet.

The coloured sachets are stuck to the wheels of the car, which are then spun out to reveal the gender of the child.

Last year an Arizona man pleaded guilty to starting a wildfire at a gender reveal party which caused more than $11.3 million worth of damage.

He had shot a target containing an explosive substance to reveal the gender of his child.
