Bears just two games away from flag glory

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

BURLEIGH are just two wins away from a fifth straight South East Queensland women’s division one premiership and they’ll be taking plenty of form into the play-offs.

The Bears extended their winning streak to four games with a solid 26-14 effort against Brothers Ipswich on Friday night at Pizzey Park.

They have a bye for the last round of the regular season next weekend, giving them a chance to freshen up before a likely clash with Easts in a second-against-third shootout for a spot in the decider.

Burleigh stuttered along during the middle of the season as injuries and representative call-ups robbed them of any continuity in their playing squad, but they have hit their groove at the right time.

“We got a lot of confidence off the back of the win on Friday night,” captain Tallisha Harden said.

“We have still got a bit to work on going into finals but I think having the week off next week will be really good for us.

“We have had a little bit of continuity over the last couple of weeks, especially having Zahara Temara back in the team.

“We’ve lost Millie Boyle to Wallaroos duties … she’s been great for us in the forward pack this year but we’re all so proud of her and so happy that she’s playing in that Wallaroos Test series.

“It gives some of our younger girls an opportunity to step up and play some big minutes for us.”

Tweed, who had the Round 13 bye, are now out of finals contention and will finish their inaugural season with an away clash against Souths.
