Earle Haven crisis no time for political points scoring

- ANGIE BELL MP, FEDERAL MEMBER FOR MONCRIEFF

AS a brand new MP representing the good people of Moncrieff, it makes my stomach turn that the Member for Gaven, a Queensland Senator and the nurses union are using the appalling treatment of the residents at Earle Haven to plot for points scoring.

It’s clear that they are hoping the smell they are leaving lingers longer to work to their advantage at the upcoming state election.

Gold Coasters can see straight through this rubbish and are sick to the eye teeth of it. These people need to focus on looking after those who elected them instead of playing the blame game.

This is about the residents, their families, jobs and the welfare of all those affected. I reiterate my letter from a few days ago that the Federal Government has done all the right things.

Along with the Minister’s office and the Department of Health, we have worked to ensure the residents are all in temporary care, the workers have the correct contacts to assist them and the investigation has been conducted in a timely and appropriate manner.

The residents deserve and are required under the Act, to be the first to know what has gone on at Earle Haven at a proper meeting where all representatives are present.

The Federal Government will make sure at 11am (today) that is the case.

The questions I have are these: When did the Member for Gaven know that the conditions at Earle Haven were deteriorating, considering she spoke about this very topic in Parliament a few months ago?

Did the incumbent Senator know what was going on and fail to do anything?

How is it possible that the Member for Gaven and the Queensland Health Minister were opportunely “Johnny on the spot” immediately after the events unfolded? Why was it necessary for the nurses union to pass a motion for an investigation when one was already under way?

As your federal representative, I am focused on getting the job done and getting outcomes for the residents of Earle Haven.
